Question by JNate: Can I get my money back through my credit card for services not received if company is now bankrupt?
I pre-payed for a class for my kids for this summer, and have now found out the company is shutting down and likely declaring bankruptcy, thus not providing the classes. I payed for it with my Discover Card. Will I be able to go through Discover and get my money back or will that not work due to the bankruptcy? Thanks.

You can imagine a new customer coming up to the counter every few minutes. His or her eyes light up, seeing an iPhone-like object and an unbelievable price tag. Nervously fingering credit cards in the wallet, a hopeful, but ever-skeptical Israeli customer beckons a member of staff to confirm the incredible deal is not a figment of his imagination, enhanced by lack of sleep before the flight.

Alas, the exasperated salesperson ruins the hopes of the unlucky shopper – it is merely an iPod touch, a shadow of the magical device that costs such an exorbitant sum of money in Israel and Europe. The disappointed customer relaxes the grip on the wallet, letting it slide back into the back jeans pocket, and lets the " DVD players" sign capture his attention.

Very soon it will be one full year since I was burglarized not once but twice. The first time on April 19, 2006, and the second time on June 23, 2006. The first burglary my power book was stolen. That was the hardest hit because I just purchased it and had barely begun to use it. I thought that I had insurance on my credit card for lost and stolen items but that was not the case, so I was screwed.

The second burglary wasn’t as bad, I lost my little Cannon Powershot, and a jar of change but it was far more frightening. I realized that I was not safe in my apartment (by the way, Kennsington, Brooklyn has quite a high burglary rate) and I had to move. This meant finding an apartment in a very tight rental market with almost no money. I have since moved to Brighton Beach and it has taken me a year to get over the terror of simply walking into my own apartment. I still scrutinize the drawers, and often check the windows from the outside to make sure they have not been tampered with. I leave the house each morning anxious about weather or not my stuff is still going to be there when I get home. I’m still anxious, but I’m getting better.

For a long time I stopped posting on the blog. I just didn’t feel safe. I feel safer now.

By the way, I know the chances are nil, but it never hurts to put the word out. My powerbook serial number is 4h60806srj7. If somehow you have this powerbook in your possession, say you purchased it on Craig’s List or Ebay? Please send me an e-mail or contact Detective Janetti at 718-972-5214. (complaint number 2193) I would really like to get it back.

A part about being wealthy is learning how to control and save your money. Notice that I use the word control before save. That’s because you can’t save your money unless you know where it’s going.

In fact, most of the people, when I congratulate them on their promotion saying, “Wow, you know I heard you just got a pay raise, so how are you saving your money?”

Do you know what they say? “I don’t know where it went.” And a lot of us, we don’t know where that money goes. To a lot of us we think that, hey, if only my income were to increase, all my problems will disappear.

There is a theory; that, your expenses, if not controlled, always rise to your level of income. So the person who makes ,000 will be broke, even if he gets a super pay raise and makes 20k a month, he will also be broke.

That’s because he can’t control his money. So track every single dollar you

spend and let me share with you a strategy on how I track every single dollar because it takes a lot of time and it’s very tedious. You know what, I use credit cards.

A lot of people when they talk about credit cards they say that credit cards are evil that credit cards make you spend more money, thus it’s no good.

But do you know? Credit cards can be a very powerful wealth creation tool. Credit cards are a double-edged sword. It can create more wealth for you or it can destroy your wealth.

Here are some pointers.

Always fully pay off your balance every month.

Never just pay your minimum balance, pay your full balance, because when you pay your full balance you do not pay a single cent on interest. And if you do that, number one, you get two months of interest free money.

How? That’s because, when you buy something from a shop, when will they bill you? They only bill you one month later. And when they bill you one month later, you only have to pay one month after you get the bill.

So it gives you two months of interest free money, if you use the credit card to buy something.

Number two, by buying thing on your credit card, what happens? Your credit card is going to record every single transaction you made. So it helps to track where your money goes.

And the third thing is that by using your credit card again and again, you can collect all these bonus points which you can redeem for free gifts and saves you a lot of money.

So that’s why credit cards can make you more money, track, control and help you save money.

Are credit cards backed by REAL money?

Question by Curious Borrower: Are credit cards backed by REAL money?
Hello everyone!!

I was just wondering…. If a card issuer sets you up with, say, a ,000
line of credit, do they actually HAVE that much in the bank, or are they just
“inventing” the money out of thin air??

(A friend of mine told me that the banks make their fortunes by loaning out
“imaginary” money — via credit cards — and getting paid back in “real” money
(our paychecks).

…Just wanted to know if this was really true.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Answer by drive_55_not
It’s actually a little of both,, Your LOC and credit card eventually turns into real money for the issuing bank … Banks actually need to borrow money to keep themselves liquid ..

Banks borrow money for a short term,, at a low interest rate,, then, loan it out to you at 15% or what ever …

Banks are required to keep enough cash reserves on hand to cover a majority of their outstanding loans,, That’s a big reason banks quit lending money during the ‘credit crunch’ .. Their reserves fell below or dangerously close to what the Fed’s sed they needed to have on hand …

spies in the bazaar
10385074 11cecbf2e3 THE CREDIT GUY: There are steps to take to get collector off your back

A brief, allegorical history of ad/spyware. I’m working on the non-allegorical version for Release 1.0.

Imagine this. You’re in a bazaar. As you enter each shop, the merchants look you over, watch what you’re looking at, and rush up to present you with their best offers. “You like the red scarf, madame? Imagine it with this lovely black leather jacket.” As you walk out, you see him taking notes, the better to greet you next time. When you return, he has a new selection ready. Pretty soon, you realize that he has been talking to the shoe merchant down the street. When you enter that store, the shoe salesman is ready with shoes to match the jacket. As you leave, you are accosted by a street urchin: “Cheap shoes, lady! The store pays rent and has to charge you more. I can give you a better deal!” You brush him off but he persists. “For free, lady! Just let me follow you as you shop, and I can keep giving you better offers.”

You acquiesce. What could be the harm in this? And the shoes are, well, they’re okay…and they’re free. The urchin follows you around, watching as you browse through the twisted streets and cramped boutiques. It makes you uneasy to have this kid watching you all the time, but never mind. When you complain, he offers to sing to you…and the music is quite pleasant. As you shop at one shoe store, the urchin shows you shoes from another merchant, who has paid him to do so. He tries to be unobtrusive; whenever they see him in public, the merchants shoo him away. One store-owner screams at him: “Go away! This customer belongs to me!” (But many of the merchants, in their back rooms, are making deals with those very same urchins, paying them to lure customers to their stores.)

Now more urchins show up, each with his own special deal. As they compete with one another, their behavior gets worse. The bazaar’s alleys are getting crowded and it’s hard to keep track of all the people swirling around. Some urchins start following you without asking, and you can’t tell one from the other. They foist tacky trinkets on you; others slip in and don’t bother to give you anything at all. Everywhere you go, kids are tugging at your sleeve and jostling the others away, whispering “Meess! Meess! Look here! Special deal!” As the confusion grows, pickpockets reach into your wallet, stealing money and credit cards. The urchins start stealing from each other, too. Some of them put false fronts up in front of the real stores, and deceive you into buying from them instead of the merchants who paid the rent; others masquerade as salespeople in the larger stores and steal commissions. Adult criminals enter the scene, organizing the meanest of the urchins into criminal bands working in concert. The merchants who hire urchins to do their dirty work shrug their shoulders and say they try hard to work only with good urchins.

Finally, police and vigilantes show up and start arresting the urchins. Dragging the kids around by the collar, the “authorities” ask: “Arrest them all?” It’s difficult to tell the vigilantes from the police, let alone the thieves/pickpockets from the once-innocent kids who gave you their names and asked your permission to follow you around. It’s a mess… you decide to leave, but the sneakiest of the urchins follow you as you leave the bazaar.

The urchins who were polite enough to get your consent and who didn’t follow you out of the bazaar are indistinguishable from the worst of the thieves and con artists. Some of the urchins vanish into the night to become permanent outlaws. Others promise to reform, but they won’t empty their pockets. They wear ID badges by daylight, but every once in a while you glimpse them in an alleyway, without ID, behaving badly again.

A couple make more credible efforts to go straight. They start wearing ID badges and they want recognition for their efforts, but most people find them hard to trust, let alone forgive. Also, the best of the urchins – call them WhenU and Claria – face new challenges trying to go straight, competing with the regular merchants to win customers’ trust. Can they learn new habits and succeed?

Re-envision the scenario above online, with websites and portals replacing the merchants and adware/spyware companies playing the urchins, and you have a pretty accurate look at the world of adware/spyware and how they are evolving.
